COME AND SUPPORT YOUR FELLOW HUMAN JBOT AND THE WORLD'S BEST ROBOT BAND, CAPTURED! BY ROBOTS You're in a band, or several, over the years. You deal with difficult band members, creative differences, maybe a little chemical dependency here and there. All you want to do is make music. Maybe you think it'll be a good idea to build some bandmates. Construct a few robots to play a hook and keep a beat and you can tour the world hassle-free sharing your music with fans everywhere. San Francisco-based Jason Vance did just that, and created robots DRMBOT 0110 on drums and GTRBOT666 on guitar and bass. Then, something went terribly wrong. DRMBOT 0110 and GTRBOT666 turned on Vance, implanted a Biocerebral Chip, and turned him into JBOT, forced to humiliate himself on stage in front of his fellow humans. They abuse him physically and verbally, while the entire band rocks out with a wicked combination of punk, metal and thrash. Joining the trio on stage is AUTOMATOM, who also abuses JBOT while laying out rocking fills and hot tom licks, The Ape Which Hath No Name and Son of The Ape Which Hath No Name, who both love JBOT, love you and drive the other Bots crazy. Two of the recent tours that JBOT was forced to endure are documented on a double CD "The Ten Commandments / Get Fit with...," which was released earlier this year. The CD includes twenty tracks, the first ten based on the Cecil B. DeMille film. Their current Fall tour is based on the late 80's early 90's TV show “Star Trek, The Next Generation." Bow down to the Robot Resistance and spend the evening on Ocean Avenue to see what this is all about. The Pony Newsletter spoke to JBOT about his captivity, the music and the theme of the current tour. The Stone Pony: So, you're in a band where you're tortured and humiliated by your fellow band members on a regular basis and forced to supplicate yourself to their massive egos just to keep yourself alive. Really, is that all that much different from every other band that you've ever been in? JBOT: I know what to expect, usually. I know they will be mean all the time. I expect the robots to be cruel rather than a two-faced band member; and robots don't usually do speed! The Stone Pony: What can you tell us about the early days? Where were the BOTs originally built and where do you all call home when you're not on the road touring? Do you remember the first venues where C!BR performed and what the crowd reactions were to what was happening on stage? JBOT: The early days were difficult. The robots and the music weren't very good but the robots did function. People were still into it because they thought it was crazy and the robots were so mean. I built the robots in my bedroom in a flat that I shared with roommates in San Francisco. The robots and I still live in San Francisco. The first show was The Whole Earth Festival in Davis, CA in 1997. The crowd loved it. The robots and I dressed up like Cyborg. The crowd thought it was a Star Trek thing. The Stone Pony: Since DRMBOT0110 and GTRBOT666 are both your creations, what happened to turn them against all humans and to enslave you? Did you make some horrible mistake when you created them, or are your creations so brilliant that you managed to create some sort of self-aware being? JBOT: One night, I spilled coffee on the CPU and when I woke up the next morning the robots had installed a Biocerebral Chip in my CPU and now I'm forced to humiliate myself in front of the humans. The Stone Pony: How did you manage to secretly build Ape Which Hath No Name after being enslaved by the BOTs? Weren't you worried that he would turn on you as well after he was completed? Isn't it a problem that even though he loves you, he also loves the other BOTs? JBOT: I snuck it in when the robots were shut off. Yes, it is definitely a problem. As for the Ape Which Hath No Name, I tried to make him nice and I was concerned about him turning bad. I was successful with the nice part, but not the just loving me part. The Stone Pony: C!BR's most recent CD release was the double CD "The Ten Commandments / Get Fit with...", which contains songs from the 2003 and 2004 tours that you were forced to undertake by the BOTs. If all of us humans go out and buy the CDs, aren't we just giving the BOTs money to help in their destruction of our species? Doesn't that just prove to the BOTs that we're as stupid as they think we are? JBOT: YEP! The Stone Pony: Have the BOTs told you if they have any plans to release future CDs? Do you think that they will ever go into the studio to record a new album and, if so, will they permit humans to help produce the project or will they just take over all of the recording equipment on their own? JBOT: We will release another CD within the next year or maybe another DVD. We will have the humans help, they have the recording equipment. The robots will do the rocking but the humans will have to do all the set up and work. The Stone Pony: The current C!BR tour based on the late 80's early 90's TV show "Star Trek, The Next Generation," and the songs will be based on episodes or characters from the show. Can you give us an idea of some of the song titles and the type of material that the BOTs have put together? JBOT: "The Theme to Star Trek TNG". "Sins of the Father" is a song about Klingon Security officer Worf. His father Mog was blamed for a massacre on Kittamer. They thought he was a spy but it wasn't him, it was a family called Duras. "Data is Fully Functional". Data has eight inches of logic and he knows how to use it. "Wesley Crusher F*** OFF". Self-explanatory. The Stone Pony: When you were asked about having a theme of ST:TNG for the current tour, you responded "I felt that it shaped my evolution of my sci fi love, and in turn, the bots...." Is it fair to say, in a weird way, that the show has then led to your enslavement and public humiliation at rock venues around the United States? JBOT: Indirectly, yes, because it fueled my creativity and made me realize that you don't have to just accept what exists. I realized that I didn't need humans, I could use robots and it would be just fine. The Stone Pony: Do the BOTs have a problem with playing characters from a TV show that shows a future where humankind uses technology to benefit many different species and expand their knowledge of the universe? Although, they might be fans of the Borg, right? JBOT: The Bots have a problem playing characters all the time 'cause they don't like to cooperate. The Bots think the Borg kick ass, so we'll see. The Stone Pony: So how much longer do you think we humans have before the Robot Resistance finally takes over and kills us all? Is there anything we should do to prepare for that day and be ready to serve our new robot masters? JBOT: I don't think it's a matter of killing the humans, more keeping them as slaves. I'm not the Amazing Kreskin, but maybe 20 years. Just prepare to suffer and as long as humans act like the sheep that they are, it will all work out fine in the end. The Captured!
