WELCOME TO THE STONE PONY'S ON-LINE NEWSLETTER Since The Stone Pony reopened a summer ago, more than 1,500 people have signed up for the on-line newsletter. Here is the first issue of our new experiment, to share news and information about the legendary rock club in Asbury Park, NJ and the performers that grace our stage. On a regular basis, we'll send you a calendar of events, so that you know who is playing. We'll also try to introduce you to new bands that you may not already be familiar with. The Stone Pony is always expanding and improving, and this where you can learn about special events, new merchandise and other goings-on. Most importantly, we want to encourage you to come down and catch a show, have a drink (or two) at the bar and eat at the Cafe. Bring a friend (or two)! WALTER TROUT AND THE RADICALS PREPARE TO GO THE DISTANCE AT THE
STONE PONY
Walter Trout plays a 1973 Fender Statocaster. This is enough to make Walter Trout cool, ask any guitarist. Walter Trout has played blues with John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton and John Mayall. Very cool. How cool can Walter Trout get? A BBC Radio 1 poll had Trout tied for sixth (with Queen's Brian May) on a list of the greatest guitarists ever, behind guys with names like Clapton, Hendrix and Page! Now that you know that Walter Trout is cool, come and see him play live on Saturday, June 9th at The Stone Pony, in support of his fourth U.S. release Go the Distance (Ruf Records). A legend in Europe, Trout's style has been favorably compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy. This is a show that you will not want to miss, whether you're into great rockin' blues, or just great music in general. Since I'm running out of legendary guitarists to compare him to, I'll stop now. For more information about Walter Trout and the Radicals, their music and fan club, visit www.waltertrout.com. |

MERL SAUNDERS & HIS FUNKY FRIENDS BRING THEIR STRUGGLE TO THE PONY
The title of Merl Saunders' latest release, Stuggling Man (Relix Records) seems to belie an extraordinary thirty-five year career. The San Francisco-native singer, composer and keyboardist, has recorded with artists as diverse as John Popper and Harry Belafonte. His 1990 new-age classic, Blues From the Rainforest: A Musical Suite ... (Sumertone), was performed with his good friend and long-time collaborator Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, and he's still going strong with over 200 gigs a year, plus other jobs producing and recording. You can catch one of this great jam band's shows at The Stone Pony on Friday, June 15th. There is a brief on-line bio of Saunders at http://skylineonline.com/merl.shtml, and you can purchase his music and even talk with Merl, on his own web site at http://www.merlsaunders.com (be sure to check out the photos page). |

CHEF LOUIS BOTTONE BRINGS CAROLINA DINING TO NEW JERSEY
Rock clubs are generally not known for more than cheap beer and maybe a quick hot dog. Until now. Recently, The Stone Pony reopened The Stone Pony Cafe, hosted by Culinary Institute of America graduate chef Louis Bottone, not just as a place to get a bite while watching a show, but with a full menu meant to draw visitors who want to have a great meal even when there isn't a show on. The Cafe is now open every business day from 11:30 am. Check out the full menu on-line and you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality and variety of the food, which has already been featured in a wonderful newspaper article in The Star Ledger. The Cafe also presents a great opportunity to visit the Club and check out the posters, photos and other displays in a quieter setting. The Cafe is available for special events, call (732) 502-0600 for more information. |
